Motomachi Shokudo 元町食堂

Motomachi Shokudo 元町食堂 on Urbanspoon

Motomachi Shokudo is located in downtown Vancouver on Denman Street. It is just a block down from their sister restaurant Kintaro. I discovered Motomachi when it first opened years ago. I was waiting in the long lineup outside of Kintaro when I noticed a sign that said Motomachi Ramen was a block away. I was hungry, and adventurous, so I left the lineup to check out this new ramen restaurant. I loved it! Their soup is healthier, organic and not as heavy as kintaro. Kintaro uses pork and fish base soup, whereas Motomachi’s broth is chicken and fish, which produces a clearer and less fatty soup.

Some things to find on the Menu:

  • Bamboo charcoal dark miso ramen

  • Butchigiri gyoza
  • Tea — is not complimentary

  • Petit bbq pork rice bowl – charsiu on top of rice with nori
  • Shio ramen with natural salt and seasonal vegetables
  • Spicy Ramen with Organic Chicken

  • Cold Ramen – onsen egg, tempura bits, wasabi, nori, beef, naruto, sesame seeds, cucumbers — served only in the summer months **Favourite**

  • Shio Ramen – flavored with salt **Favourite**
  • Shoyu Ramen – flavored with soy sauce
  • Miso Ramen – flavored with miso

I used to enjoy ramen from Kintaro, but I have not gone in a while because I found that it was too heavy. I only go when I am feeling indulgent, but if I want pork based soup, my new favourite has been Santouka. On my healthy days, I go to Motomachi for something lighter.

  1. YUM my favourite topic hehehe Gmen/Nanchu offers chicken soup base too. DITTO on the cold ramen being the best at Moto and that Santouko is the best ramen hands down! Fatty though… just the way I like it ;)
